Day 124, Bonaire (first night dive for the boys)😳

Dive, dive and more diving! Bonaire is deservedly called a divers paradise, and this is something that the population eagerly promotes and is something that’s even printed on the license plates of our cars. Most tourists visit Bonaire just to drive.

We did three dives today, White slave, angel’s paradise, and something special( night dive). Driving at night is totally different to driving in the daylight because different animals are active. We saw 10 eels in the night dive, squid πŸ™ and turtles.

Did you know that in order to sleep, parrot fish secretes a kind of slime from behind their gills that they wrap around their bodies, taking about half an hour to create a cocoon. The slimy cocoon has a number of purposes. Firstly, it hides the sent of the parrot fish, making it less visible to predators, since a sense of smell is a hunting fish’s primary weapon as it searches for pray at night. Secondly, this layer of slime has a nasty taste, making a parrotfish less attractive as a meal. Thirdly, recent research has shown that this layer of slime keeps parasites away at night, probably because the scent of the parrotfish is concealed. This slimy cocoon is often easy to see at night however the fish need time to build their cocoons, you’ll probably miss out on observing this phenomenon if you don’t dive at night!!<<<<
