Day 9, Copan ruins, Honduras

Copan ruins were part of the Mayan classic period between the 4th and 8th century. It was discovered in 1502 by Diego Garcia Palacio, a Spanish priest who wrote a letter to King Ferdinand ll, but because there was no gold discovered they did not care. Later, it was rediscovered by John Lloyd Stevens in 1834. There were 17 rulers. The 13th ruler ( 18 bunny) was the most famous. He lived until the age of 85 unfortunately he was killed by his family members because he was the most popular. The main reason he was very  popular was because the number 13 was known as a symbolic number. The ceiba tree is the tree of life known to connect the underworld with the Supraworld( heaven ). The National bird of Honduras is the scarlet Macaw. This is because the colors of there feathers were the same colors of the gods they belived in. Specifically the sun, moon and war gods. Speaking of birds we also went to a sancuary where they rescue birds. They even put a Macaw on my head!!!!                                                       -Uma
P.S the mayans discovered the number zero and  their number system was based on 20( 10 fingers and 10 ten toes)the ceiba tree( tree of life)
