Day 95, Punta Arenas, Chile

  1. Visited Magdalena island and Penguin reserve by crossing the straits of Magellan to Isla Magdalena and Isla Marta. These two islands form the Los Pinguinos National Minumeny, protecting more than 120,000 penguins and a colony of sea lions. Magellan penguins 🐧 migrate from Brazil each year due to the daylight hours 4.30am-11pm) These long days allow them to search for their food, mostly sardines. Interesting fact: Magellan male penguins Do the housekeeping and arrive 2 weeks early to prep their homes with rocks, grass and leaves. The females arrive looking for a mate that they stay with for life( and the best kept home). Both parents never leave their nest until their eggs are hatched. Penguins live up to 30 years, 1-4 years are considered juveniles. The size of their stripes indicated how old the penguin is!! So mush fun watching them prepare their burrows!!! Now we have seen all 5 species of penguins that live in South America (Macaroni, King, Magellan, Gentoo and Rock Hoppers) β€‹β€‹
