Day 92, Falkland Islands( penguin Heaven)

An overseas Territorty of The United Kingdom, the Falkland Islands are internally self governed and financially self sufficient, though the U.K. Government retains responsibility for their defense and foreign affairs.

It was discovered by the Portuguese in the 16th century, but was not colonized until the French and British unbeknownst to each other, established ports on different islands, and Spain claimed them at one point too. All withdrew over time and  first permanent settlement didn’t take root until the 1840’s when the  British sent over a group of military pensioners with kit houses and gave them 10 acres to cultivate. For over 150 years the people lived in obscurity, tending sheep and serving the ships that passed the Cape Horn until 1982 when Argentina and Great Britain fought over ownership of the island. The 74 day war ended with the U.K. Victorious.

The penguins are the islands biggest attraction. Gentoo, king, rockhoppers, Macoroni and Magellanic. We got to see all 5 species in our 4×4 land excursion that took us to 3 sides on the island. We also saw browned albatross flying around the penguin colonies trying to steal the eggs!!😳
