There are 27 islands on the Uyuni flats many with caves.We visited several caves that had fossilized algae and sea creatures 180,000,000 years old, as well as, mummies 1200 years old with teeth, hair and toe nails intact😳all preserved by the salt. Many villages around the salt flats harvest salt or quinoa . Life here is very harsh and the younger generation don’t want to follow their ancestors cultivating and harvesting so decide to move to bigger cities, therefore many towns are sadly becoming abandoned. Lamas and flamingos( 3 types) can be seen all over the flats as well as vecunas( the softest and finest of the wool!) we stayed in a salt hotel( everything made of salt!! Beds, chairs, walls)so cool!!
