4.02 am arrival and we are hit with little oxygen and dry air. Walking to baggage pick up we are huffing and puffing.😩4150 meters ( that’s 13,615feet) Higher than Cusco! El Alto is where the plane landed, the city La Paz is the highest city in the world. Did you know it takes 3 generations to acclimate to this altitude ??Locals here have bigger hearts and lungs. With 4 hours of sleep we set off for a full day tour of the city. First the cable car station for a scenic view of the city and surrounding mountains. They are the modern and efficient transportation system implemented 4 years ago. Then the witches market, full of herbs and magic charms( also llama fetus that they bury under their homes for luck), government palace, gold museum, and cathedral of San Francisco. Finally, the valley of the moon, where rock formations carved by wind and rain have created a lunar landscape. A few bottles of oxygen, coca leaves, coca candy and Coca tea( all meant to help with altitude sickness) and some sleep was how we finished our day.
