Day 41, Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave, Belize.

The cave is located in the Mountain Tapir Reserve deep in the jungle. The mayans performed human sacrifices to their gods there. It was first entered by them in 300-900AD. In the cave we saw various types of ceramics and stoneware, as well as 5 remains of skeletons. The Mayans considered ATM highly sacred location connecting to the underworld.

The caves which we were NOT allowed cameras( so these photos from the web site really don’t do it justice) was a maze of chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites and columns. We had to squeeze, crawl, swim, climb and slide to reach the chambers!!! As the tour guide out it” if you go th Egypt you have to experience the pyramids, china the Great Wall, Guatemala you must see atikal and Belize you MUST experience ATM”

Goodbye beautiful Belize we are off to Honduras⛵️
