Day 30, puerto adventuras, Tulum( yesterday’s post)

Early and busy day visiting Tulum, Coba and a cenote. Tulum ( meaning city of stone) was one of the last cities built and inhibited by the Mayans. It’s actual name was Zama( meaning city of dawn). It sits on the Caribbean Sea. The pyramid El Castillo is the central precinct to the city. It was an important trading port during the late post classic. By 10am it was sweltering hot and time to move to the next  ruins!!

Coba is another ancient Mayan site. It has the tallest pyramid-temple in the Yucatán Peninsula 148ft which you can climb and you know we did!!! The ruins were built deep inside the jungle and there are still many ruins for archeologist to excavate.  We rode in tuktuks around the ruins as they were quite spread out.

Finally, we cooled off in Cenote cave that we had to walk down 87 steps to get down to. The water was a cool 76 degrees( freezing) but a wonderful way to end the day.

P.S we saw a ritual performance of men representing the sun rays blessing earth for a good harvest where the men hang by one foot spiraling down a 35-40 ft post for almost 4mins while playing the flute and drums.
